Oral Health Benefits of Tea

Posted on 7/23/2017 by Doctor Kethcart
Tea can provide oral health benefits.
It's tea time! Want an easy way to keep your mouth healthy during the day and evening? Of course, you do. That's why you should start drinking tea. Recent research indicates that drinking hot tea can have a beneficial effect on your oral health. Now before you get excited and think to yourself how fortuitous that is because that you drink tea all the time, not all tea is created equal. Black tea and brown tea, don’t count. The only tea that gives you this benefit is green tea.

Green Tea and Your Oral Health

All teas have different constituent properties, and the research that was performed found that green tea contains compounds that other teas don’t have. The compounds that are contained in green tea have the ability to control inflammation, and they also have anti-bacterial properties. In addition to these compounds, green tea has antioxidants as well, which have many health benefits.

So, what does all of this mean? Well, the anti-bacterial properties control the bacteria in your mouth and lower the acidity of your saliva and plaque. This helps to prevent cavities and also reduces bleeding from the gums.

The anti-inflammatory properties of green tea also help to prevent gum disease. German and Egyptian studies show that green tea drinkers have less gum disease than those who do not drink green tea.

Another benefit is that drinking one to three cups of green tea per day helps to prevent tooth loss. A Japanese study tracked people who drink green tea and found that they are more likely to keep their natural teeth.

Green tea can also help you to have better breath. The anti-bacterial compounds kill the bacteria that causes bad breath. That’s an easy way to keep your breath fresh. Time to get some green tea and get that bacteria under control. If you have any questions, or if you would like to learn more, please call us today at (602) 789-3799.
